Justin's Story
Justin is an 8-year-old boy on the Marietta Marlins Swim Team.  Justin was diagnosed with Alopecia Areata in July of 2013.  Alopecia is a disease that causes hair to fall out; there is no cure.  Justin’s mother heard through a friend that swimming is a good sport for those with Alopecia because they do not have to shave their head’s like most of their teammates do.  At this point, treatments were not working for Justin and they were more than willing to try anything that may help him.  Joining the Marlins seemed like a great idea since Justin loves swimming at the Devola pool during the summer months.

Justin came to “Try It and Like It” in September, a full week of swim team experiences for those who have never swam competitively before.  He absolutely loved his time in the water and decided to join the team!  Justin displayed great potential for never having swum before and proved to be a great addition to the Marlins!

Justin enjoyed swimming so much that he even wanted extra time with the coaches to learn every little thing he could before the first meet. He even dove off the block   in his very first meet, even though he had never really done it before!  Justin has performed so well that he has managed to improve his times at every meet.
When his parents ask him if he would like to take a night off from swimming, he tells them “No, let’s go to swimming, I don’t want to miss”!

Justin truly enjoys being a part of the Marietta Marlins and his parents and coaches are very proud of his accomplishments.  There is no way to know for sure, but his family believes that swimming has even helped his hair grow back!
